Concrete slump testThere is doubt that concrete is widely used and of the major construction material. There are some quality tests which are conducted to determine the efficiency and quality of the concrete being used. One of the tests is carried out is the slump test. It is conducted to measure the workability and consistency of the concrete. It is easy to run, requires a reduced amount of time and does not require sophisticated equipment to run. Due to this, slump test has become so common all over the globe. During the test the uniformity of the concrete is measured giving the indication if the concrete is workable or not.

The equipment used

Some equipment are used to measure the performance of concrete. The test kits are readily available in the market. However, the test kits to be used must adhere to the standards. The following are use:

Mould

The mould has a cone like shape where the cone is referred as Abrams cone. The cone can be made of plastic or metal. It has a height of 30 cm, base diameter of 20 cm, and the top opening of 10cm.

Base plate

It can be made of steel, polymer or Aluminum.  It comes with a holding part.

Tamping Rod

The tamping rod is twenty-four inches and usually made of steel. it has a diameter of 8cm.

The testing procedure

The following are the procedures followed to carry out the test

  • The mould is cleaned properly
  • The base plate is cleaned. The base plate should be horizontal, non porous and smooth. The mould is placed on the base plate.
  • Fresh concrete is filled in the mould and should form three layers. Each layer should be tampered using the steel rod and it should be done uniformly.
  • Extra concrete should be removed and the surface made level. When placing the fresh concrete, the mould should be held firmly using handles.
  • The mould is then lifted vertically and then the concrete will slump.

Cautions during the slump test

The following should be observed;

  • Moisten the before any test. This is to reduce friction.
  • Before lifting the mould, the cone base should be cleaned from concrete spills which dropped accidentally.
  • Ensure the base plate is non porous
  • The test should be run in areas free from vibrations
